Privacy Policy — MuddleMend Substack
Last Updated: 13/05/2026
This Privacy Policy explains how MuddleMend collects, uses, and protects your information when you subscribe to and interact with the MuddleMend Substack newsletter. By subscribing, you consent to the data practices described below.
This policy is a companion to the MuddleMend website Privacy Policy, which covers our website, digital products, and broader data practices. Where both policies apply, the more specific provisions in this newsletter policy take precedence for Substack-related activity.
1. The Substack Platform
MuddleMend’s newsletter is hosted on Substack. When you subscribe, your data is processed by both MuddleMend and Substack Inc. Substack operates under its own privacy policy, which governs the platform’s data handling, including subscriber accounts, payment processing (if applicable), analytics infrastructure, and storage. You can read Substack’s privacy policy at https://substack.com/privacy.
MuddleMend is the publisher and is responsible for how subscriber data is used in the context of the MuddleMend newsletter. Substack is responsible for the platform infrastructure that delivers it.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information You Provide Directly
Newsletter subscriptions: Email address and, where you choose to provide it, your name.
Comments and replies: If you comment on posts or reply to newsletter emails, we receive that content along with your email address.
Survey or feedback responses: If you respond to a reader survey or feedback request, we receive your responses.
2.2 Information Collected Through Substack
Substack collects and provides MuddleMend with engagement data, including which posts you open, which links you click, your approximate location based on IP address, and subscription activity (subscribed, unsubscribed, opened in app vs email, etc.).
2.3 Information We Do Not Collect
The MuddleMend Substack newsletter is currently free and does not collect payment information. If paid subscriptions are introduced in future, this policy will be updated to reflect what additional information is collected and how it is handled.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to deliver newsletter content to your inbox, understand which content is useful so we can publish more of it, respond to your comments or replies, send occasional updates about MuddleMend products, workshops, or the upcoming course, and comply with legal obligations.
We do not use your information to build advertising profiles, sell to third parties, or share with anyone outside the tools needed to operate the newsletter.
4. How We Share Your Information
Your information is shared with Substack as the platform provider — this is unavoidable for the newsletter to function. Substack’s handling of your data is governed by Substack’s privacy policy.
We may occasionally share aggregated, anonymised data (for example, “this post had 500 readers”) in conference talks, methodology pieces, or business reporting. This data cannot identify you individually.
We do not sell your personal information, share your email address with third parties for their marketing, or publicly disclose personal information without your consent.
5. Data Retention
We retain your subscription information for as long as you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe, Substack retains a record of your unsubscription to ensure you are not re-added. You can request full deletion at any time (see Section 7).
6. Cookies and Tracking
The Substack platform uses cookies and tracking pixels in newsletter emails to record open and click activity. These are standard for email newsletters and are managed by Substack — see Substack’s privacy policy for full detail. You can disable image loading in your email client to reduce tracking.
7. Your Privacy Rights
You have the right to unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of any newsletter email, access the personal information we hold about you, request correction of inaccurate information, request deletion of your information (subject to any legal obligations to retain it), and request data portability.
As an Australian business, MuddleMend complies with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988. You may also complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at https://www.oaic.gov.au
To exercise any of these rights, contact hello@muddlemend.com. We will respond within 30 days.
8. International Subscribers
MuddleMend operates from Perth, Western Australia. Substack operates from the United States. If you subscribe from outside Australia, your information may be transferred to and processed in both Australia and the United States, where data protection laws may differ from your local jurisdiction.
If you are located in the European Union, United Kingdom, or California, you may have additional rights under GDPR, UK GDPR, or CCPA respectively. To exercise these rights, contact hello@muddlemend.com.
9. Children’s Privacy
The MuddleMend newsletter is not intended for individuals under 18 years old. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected information from someone under 18, please contact us immediately.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. Material changes will be communicated to subscribers via the newsletter itself. The “Last Updated” date at the top of this policy reflects the most recent revision.
11. Contact
For questions about this Privacy Policy or how your information is handled, contact hello@muddlemend.com.
